The Myth of Eater

The Myth of Eater is one of the first documented pieces of literature on Ahldorae and the most influential story on Continent, forming the theological basis for every currently existing religion. The Myth of Eater is sometimes classified as meta-religion.

The Myth of Eater exists as an oral tradition and as several dozen different written versions that share a very strong thematic resemblance.

The myth

While there are many variations, most versions have three parts.

The first part is a creation myth, according to which the world is a story that gods are telling each other. The story is so long and involves so many characters, that no individual god can know all of it, and the only way to keep the story intact is for all the gods to work together and closely listen to each other. The story is told in a language forbidden to mortals, because every word of that language is a spell that actively shapes the world we live in. Therefore, as the story is being told, words of gods are creating the world on the fly.

The second part is about

The third part is a story about Eater, a preternatural animalistic creature that is more powerful than any individual god, but just slightly less powerful than all the gods taken together. Disease, famine and wars happen when Eater manages to fool other gods into listening to its version of the story. But most importantly, Eater is insatiable and wants to devour the universe.

The only way to defeat Eater is for all the gods to join forces, but this will not happen until the end of the world, when all gods are going to be individually defeated and swallowed by Eater. When they are all inside his belly, only then will they truly come together and defeat the Eater from within.
