Inoffensive Chess

Starting position

Inoffensive Chess (also known as Humane Chess and Friendship Chess) is a chess variant designed by Trotto Frekkensnork.

The rules of the game are identical to the original chess, but the King pieces are removed, so that no matter how the game plays out, neither of the players is able to do a checkmate and it will always be a draw, hence “friendship”.

"People get offended when they lose in chess. They might feel that getting checkmated says something negative about their character. I wanted to create a game when you will leave the game feeling all nice and fluffy."

Trotto Frekkensnork.

Reception

“Table Flip”, a Losers International logo

Inoffensive Chess received mixed reaction from the public. More experienced players described the experience as “excruciating”. It was, however, an instant hit among bad players and won “Best Game” award from Losers International.

Patriarchy proponents claim that the Inoffensive Chess is offensive to them and refuse to play it.

Mr. Porridge argues that the removal of the king makes the queen an ultimate goal, and that a player who captures opponent's queen is the winner. “They are the one who are going to leave with a smile on their face,” - Mr. Porridge was reported as saying. Frekkensnork disagrees by countering that this is a typical error that beginners make. “One can always loose to a pair of well coordinated knights!” - she said.

A Pair of Well Coordinated Knights became a motto of the fans of the game.
