Jar and Donkey

Jar and Donkey pub sign

Jar and Donkey is a pub in Alaska. It was first featured in a short story How People Become Gold Miners, and later appeared to be the location for monthly meetings of the Trouser Suppliers Guild.

It is not clear how the Guild, located on another continent, is able to travel to Alaska every month for a short sit-down at the pub. J. N. Spoilsport argues that Prince Ruifa should have enough money to fund the operation. Mr. Porridge, however, points out that “Jar and Donkey” might simply be a chain.

The pub is known for its miraculous ability to fit crowds of people in what seems to be very cramped space, and boasts no written menu and the ability to take oral requests, even if it means expending substantial resources in order to fulfill guests' wishes.

The Jar Puzzle

The Jar Puzzle is a question that is written on the menu of the pub. It asks: “What is inside the jar? Guess correctly and win a million dollars!”

To this day no one has won the prize. It is not clear whether there is really the right answer. Scholars point out that Jar and Donkey has no menu and, thus, there is no fork.
