Overpol clan

Overpol clan was a family that founded and ruled the Overpol Expanse for three generations. Founded by Dod Overpol, the clan was known for keeping their private life away from the public eye, as well as using propaganda and ideology to spread their influence to the extent unusual in their time.

Because of that, the story of their rise is somewhat mythologized and the circumstances of their downfall has a lot of unanswered questions.

Dod Overpol

Dod /dʌd/ Overpol (19th CSR - 1901 SR) was born in the northern region of Tarnaria. The little that's known about her childhood was captured and mythologized in children's books about “wise Grandma Dod” which became popular in the Overpol Expanse. The tradition has since died out and many books have been lost, but several copies are preserved in Couleds.

The mythologized story goes as follows.

She met and married a superhero warrior known as the Forest Leveler. Their life goal was what they called The Big Adventure, which meant walking the plains and forests of the world on foot. Together they traveled from Tarnaria to the forest near the Taverda river, where they were welcomed into one of the villages. However, several days later the people of the village tried to kill them, because during their stay one of the children had gotten sick and the villagers believed that this was because of the strangers. Fighting for their lives, the Forest Leveler killed several of the attackers and scared the rest away.

Since then they became infamous in the area and people began to avoid them. They set up a small house near the river, which they called Dav, which meant “cornerstone” in bukk.

Dod knew a lot about plants and animals and they soon created a large and beautiful garden, with trees so high that people from afar began to notice the garden. They would come to the house and talk to their inhabitants, Dod and the Forest Leveler, and no one would ever leave without a gift.

Eventually, previous stories were forgotten and Dod and the Forest Leveler were accepted into the local community. And as their garden grew and prospered, some began coming over and buying their produce. And eventually people began building their houses near the garden and a whole community grew around Dav, the house of Dod and the Forest Leveler.

The story then goes on to tell how Dod was chosen to be the leader of the community and the Forest Leveler became its guardian. People flocked to Dav, searching for peace and protection.

What is actually real in the story has not been easy to tell. The story is clearly a myth, but the general consensus is that the narrative might be generally true: that Dod and the Forest Leveler definitely had conflicts with the local populace, but that eventually they had been successful in turning the public opinion around and being accepted into the community. It is also possible that their way to gain power and influence had indeed been through promising protection, due to the Forest Leveler being apparently the only superhero warrior in the area. This tactic became the linchpin of Dod's innovative approach to building influence.

Another notable difference was that the Overpol family, later frequently denoted as the Overpol clan, was very numerous and their traveling party consisted of more than just Dod and the Forest Leveler: by the end of the 60s of 19th CSR multiple settlements on the Taverda river were ruled or at least lead by Overpols.

In 1873 SR Dav was already well known down the river as a prosperous city full of wonders, more specifically known for its gardens and very high trees. The latter is a curious bit of history, since no evidence of any special type of tree has ever been uncovered, and yet the information appears in several independent resources. It is possible that the “high trees” is a reference to the Dav Garden, which was built on the roof of the Dav Palace and was indeed seen from afar, although the latter had been competed only by 1894.

By mid 70s of 19th CSR Dod Overpol announced The Expansion, which was essentially an ultimatum to the neighboring areas. The declaration suggested that in return for their loyalty they would fall under the protection of the Overpol clan. Many have agreed and various members and friends of the clan had been installed as rulers, significantly expanding Dod's influence in the area.

The Kingdom of Mamkoon had an exclave in the area called Mamkoon Tre which consisted of three large cities centered around a salt mining operation. Led by a Mamkoon representative Dul Tremant, they sent a small regiment to Dav, in order to intimidate Dod. Kareden soldiers marched in front of Dav's gates, pointing spears toward the city. There was no immediate reaction from Dod, but several months later the Mamkoon Tre Campaign began. The war and sieges lasted for two years, with Mamkoon Tre eventually yielding to the Overpol Expanse, only to abandon all the three cities. No salt mines had been found, leaving Dod empty-handed.

In 1881 Dod Overpol moved down the river to Delbar and announced it as the capital of the country she called the Overpol Expanse. Delbar was also referred by her as the High Hill. Her reason for moving the capital from Dav to Delbar was her desire to move focus away from Dav, the city that she wanted to keep as the home of the Overpol clan.

The Forest Leveler died in 1890, but this was concealed by Dod for many years, due to her fearing that this might undermine her power.
